How to Think Originally.

Five habits for thinking more creatively, inspired by Odysseas.

cover

I watched a video by Odysseas that got me thinking about how original ideas actually form. Five habits stood out.

First, be selective about what you feed your mind. If you read the same things as everyone else, you’ll think the same things. Go sideways — unusual topics, overlooked genres, things outside your field. The more distinct your inputs, the more distinct your output.

Second, create space for thinking. It’s easy to fill every gap with consumption — podcasts on the commute, videos before bed, articles at lunch. The processing happens in the gaps, not the intake. You need quiet time for ideas to actually form.

Third — get out and experience things. Sitting at a desk looking for inspiration is the wrong setup. Walking somewhere new, talking to someone with a completely different life — that’s where the material comes from.

Fourth, start before you’re ready. The act of making something generates more ideas than thinking about making it ever does. You can’t see the next step until you take the first one.

Finally, lean into what makes you different. The strange overlap between two things you care about that nobody usually connects — that’s where original ideas live.
